VOC stands for volatile organic compounds which are gas emissions released into the air that reduce the air quality in your home. Almost all paints have VOC’s in them and customers are able to look on the can when purchasing paint to see the amount of VOC content each can of paint has. A common misconception people have when painting their home is that airing out the room for a couple of days after painting prevents dangerous chemicals from being inhaled. However, that is not the case, while you may not be able to smell the chemicals in the paint the emissions are still lingering for over a year after painting.
These chemicals can have short-term and long-term effects on a person’s health such as headaches, throat irritation, lung damage and damage to the nervous system. There are paints available, such as Lime Wash, paints that have very small traces of VOC’s which are better for your home and the environment. Even if a paint can says non-VOC or zero-VOC they still do contain contain some VOC content. We recommend you always look or ask about VOC content in paint you are looking to purchase. Especially in children or nursey rooms, remember paints with limited VOC content are the safest for you and your family.
Getting your home painted is always exciting, whether you are planning out the colors you want in your new home or even just bringing life to the current paint. Just like any home renovations however, there is always a budget and figuring out what it costs to have your home painted is not always easy. We are looking to help by giving some background information on what helps us calculate a quote for clients.
Our pricing is based on a variety of factors, we first look at the scope of work. What is it you want painted? For example: walls, ceilings, trim, doors, windows, closets etc. How many rooms do you want painted? It could be the entire apartment, or maybe only the bedrooms that need a new coat. Other important factors that we look at is the size of the home, how high the ceilings are, and if any repairs are needed.
Knowing the right number of coats to apply is important. For example, if your wall is a dark or very pigmented color, and you want a lighter color, typically, we use primer and two coats of paint. Now, if the walls are being painted the same color occasionally, we can use one coat, but it depends on how long it has been since the walls were painted. As time goes by the walls become what we call ‘thirsty’, so sometimes one coat is insufficient because it leaves the walls looking patchy, therefore in these cases two coats are needed.
As you can see there are various factors that go into giving our clients a fair quote. Not every client is aware of what information we need, so we hope this post gives our clients better insight, because transparency allows us to have a better understanding with our clients. We want to do everything in our power to make sure each client feels they have been treated fairly and that the work they received exceeded their expectations.
With more people working from home recently, it is more important than ever to make your home feel as comfortable as possible. You want the environment you live in to make you feel at ease. Adding color to your home is one of the best ways to help do this. While colors can help make a room a appear taller, wider, or brighter it can also affect how a person feels when they are in a room. For example, the atmosphere in a bedroom should be peaceful and relaxing, lighter cool tones tend to convey this feeling. For someone who enjoys cooking and having people over for home cooked meals, an inviting color such as a shade of yellow for the kitchen would be the best option. In a family room, such as the living room, where friends and family typically gather, blue is always an attractive choice.
Most people are scared to introduce colors into their home, rightfully so, but with the help of professionals we can help you add some into your life without it being too much of an overwhelming experience. At City Zen Painting we offer complimentary color consultations to help you ease your way into color additions. We want to help lift your spirits with colors!
